AHMEDABAD: Gujarat’s experiment with real time continuous emission monitoring of 350 industrial units in Surat city has led to an almost 25% reduction in toxic particulate matter emissions, claimed American economist Michael Greenstone. He is the Milton Friedman professor in economics at the University of Chicago and has served as the chief economist to the council of economic advisers attached to former US president Barack Obama.

“These are encouraging signs ahead of the launch of the world’s first emission trading scheme (ETS) for particulate matter scheduled for launch on August 15,” said Greenstone.
